User Submitted Tips

  • As a teacher, I am continually looking for different unique items to put in my classroom. From fairy tale animals to intricate frames, I can find everything I need for my classroom at second hand stores. I don't like spending a lot of money-as I have a large family to take care of. So, the second hand stores are my way of splurging on my classroom without having to break the bank. I also have found wonderful statues and knick-knacks from other countries at the second hand stores. These are always my students' favorites-it gives them a taste of other cultures. So, if you are on a budget, but still want unique items, visit the second hand stores-they rock!
  • My family buys second hand but we still wear name brand clothing. Most of our shopping is done at the actual second hand stores, but my daughter buys some online. The best advice I can give is to be sure and wash everything you buy thoroughly. Not that the second hand stores don't wash their items, but it's best to be safe. Do real good once over look at everything too. Sometimes there are defects that will cause you trouble later on down the road. Jeans especially that have been distressed, coming from second hand stores, tend to have a shorter life too.
  • I went to a furniture store the other day, and holy moly! They want an arm and a leg for furniture now days. I walked in and right back out after glancing at the price tag of a sofa sitting near the front door. I took myself right on over to the second hand store. Now you have to watch furniture at those second hand stores for blemishes and stains. And if you want a matching set, you have to be patient. But I have lucked out several times buying furniture second hand. Now I might need to strip and stain now and then. But, it sure beats paying those high prices at the furniture store.
