- Futons are no longer synonymous with hippies and college students. They are an awesome space saving alternative to an actual couch. Yes, they have their limitations, but they also have their place. Spend some time checking online futon websites. These actually have better selection, quality & prices than brick & mortar futon stores. Solid wood framed futons are the most durable; some metal-framed ones are good, too, but should really be weight-tested before you buy. Futon frames are not as easy to replace as futon mattresses. Make sure you check the online futon store's return policy, just in case.
- The best way to buy a futon is to look for online futon stores that offer a deal on futon sets, that is, the futon frame and the mattress. It is much cheaper to buy the whole set than to buy the frame and mattress separate. Make sure that when considering the price, the mattress is included. You don't want to get your futon and be all ready to set it up only to find that you have no mattress! Another good tip is to look for futon accessory package deals that include an extra futon cover and/or pillows.
- Did you know there is a whole industry dedicated to futon accessories? I did not. However, when I recently purchased a futon and realized it needed more, I did some looking online. Apparently, futon accessories are a real need, because there are lots and lots of online futon accessory websites. There are futon covers, futon pillows and futon ottomans. There are even rubber wedges you put under the mattress to keep your butt from sinking-great idea! I don't think all of these are absolute necessities, but you do want to buy at least one futon mattress cover.
