  • The most important thing to know about furnaces and heating equipment and supplies is that a little bit of careful maintenance, such as changing furnace filters in, will save you the time, money and hassle that goes along with having to buy a brand new furnace. Keeping the filters and ducts clean will not only prolong the life of your furnace but will help the furnace work better and more efficiently. You should really have your furnace inspected by a licensed furnace inspector every year. A problem detected before it's a problem is well worth the price of a furnace inspection.
  • Before you call an expensive heating and cooling "specialist" for your furnace repairs or heating equipment/supplies, make sure that the problem isn't an easy one that you can do yourself. There are several easy repairs for furnaces that you can do yourself if your furnace isn't running properly. Here's the deal, though-DO NOT try to do any repairs to your furnace without spending some time researching some do-it-yourself furnace websites and books. On-line guides are available to walk you through some common problems, like squealing furnace belts & how to replace them, replacing filters, and cleaning the air blower.
  • The most common furnace replacement part is the furnace filter. These filters come in all sorts of sizes, so the first thing to know is what size your furnace needs. Measuring your furnace is one way to find that out. There are also lots of different kinds of filters, some much more expensive than others. In my experience, the cheap-o ones work pretty well, buy if you have the extra cash, premium furnace filters are definitely worth it, especially if you live in an old, dusty house or if you or someone in your house has allergies.
