User Submitted Tips

  • I'm remodeling my kitchen, and my mind is swimming with the different types of kitchen cabinet styles and sizes available! There are custom cabinets, which of course are more expensive. Then there are stock cabinets-which are more affordable, but not quite as nice looking. And I don't even want to get into all of the colors available! With all of the choices, I discovered that the best way to go about buying cabinets for my kitchen is to research the sizes available, what would fit in my kitchen space and look the best, and what colors would match the rest of my house. Of course, I need to budget as well.
  • I have an older home, and my kitchen cabinets were starting to look a little shanty. I thought about sanding them down and refinishing them, but boy that would be a lot of work. That was a job I just wasn't willing to tackle. Instead, I got online and looked up numbers for local cabinet stores. I called several and had them come out and give me an estimate for custom cabinets. After reviewing the estimates and checking references, I put those guys to work. Keep in mind that going with the cheapest estimate is not always the best thing to do. After calling references, I found that the cheapest cabinet store did not have the best references. My new cabinets look great! A few years down the road, I may consider getting custom cabinets in my bathrooms as well.
  • My husband and I are building our first home together. We are so excited and everything has gone off without a hitch. We are working on our master bathroom and have gotten to the question about cabinets. I had no idea there were so many variations of bathroom cabinets. We spent 2 hours at our local hardware store looking at cabinet after cabinet. I'm done, no more, not one more cabinet picture, please! I want oak, with a slight gloss finish, no knobs, cut in indentions, maybe panels and deep enough to hold my stuff that I will eventually just throw under there in the mornings. Whew, I've made my decision, who knew that this decision could bring me to the brink of my sanity.
  • We bought our first home, a beautiful Victorian style. However, we were having a terrible time finding a table that matched the color wood on our cabinets, it just seems they don't make that color wood anymore. A contractor friend of ours suggested getting unfinished cabinets and tables, and then staining them ourselves. I thought this was a great idea. It didn't take long and we had found the cabinets we wanted. After getting 13 different color stains from the store we readied ourselves for the task at hand, finding the perfect color of wood for our new/old house. It was a fun project that turned out beautifully.
