- General merchandise distributors are the lifeline to small general merchandise retail shops, mostly of the dollar store variety. The big chain stores have their own warehouses and distribution system. General merchandise distributors provide all the products sold in general merchandise stores. Some of the things to consider when looking for a distributor are location of the distributor. It's often a good idea to shop close to home, lessening the chance of shipping delays and other distance-related problems. In the last few years, concerns have arisen about the safety of some products manufactured in China, so look at product recall lists to make sure to avoid dangerous products.

Prices at general merchandise stores are lower, but sometimes the quality of some things suffers. The best things I have found to buy at these dollar store-type stores are cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, and home stuff-picture frames, fake flowers, things like that. General merchandise store comparison sites can help you choose which store to shop in.
- Is shopping in general merchandise stores a better deal than buying in bulk warehouse stores? It depends on what you're looking for. Things like paper products, dry goods with a long shelf life, or other things like toys our clothes may be cheaper in a general merchandise store, however, the things at the warehouse stores are usually of a higher quality. But...you have to consider the price of membership at the warehouse store, and usually, the variety is not there, usually there are only one or two brands of things. So the answer is maybe. It completely depends on what you need and your financial situation.
